Stephen Spence, of Anchorage, Alaska, has won the annual Valdez STOL Contest in his modified1956 Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Powered by a Lycoming 360 engine with an 80" Hartzell metal propeller, Stephen was airborne in 40ft. He then landed in 85ft, taking First Place in the Light Touring Class (below 2,300 lb MGTW). He was aided by 29" Alaska Bushwheels on his main gear, an 850 tire on his nosewheel, a Sportsman’s STOL Kit, and Micro VGs.
What stands out is that Stephen’s landing was 5ft shorter than the best Super Cub performance and his take off was 50ft shorter than the best launch in a Super Cub.
Stephen reports that “shifty” winds this year “were very challenging.” He said, “A steady afternoon sea breeze that varied between gusty and dead calm required intense focus to maintain control on final.” Stephen’s control was good enough to score 85ft and 86ft landings. It was Stephen’s second competition at Valdez, Alaska, and he won his class both times.
