About the topic
Calibration is an important tool used to monitor and improve the accuracy and reliability of dimensional measuring systems over time. The ideal calibration method will search for and find any problems in measuring systems in the most efficient manner. In an effort to reduce calibration expenses, some organizations may choose a more limited calibration plan that increases the possibility of problems with measuring systems going undetected. In addition, changes in measuring system technology and skills of personnel may result in the use of questionable calibration methods. One of the goals of this presentation is to show that there are readily accessible tools to manage and reduce these quality risks. Over the years, a number of excellent American and international standards have become available that can be implemented by any organization to improve calibration practice. Far too often, organizations are not aware of these new standards. This presentation will provide an overview of some of the latest developments in dimensional metrology standards and show methods for organizations to leverage these standards to reduce risks in calibration. This presentation will also include insight on workforce training in best practices in calibration.

Meet your presenter
Dr. James G. Salsbury is the general manager of Corporate Metrology at Mitutoyo America Corp. He is involved with new technology, advanced applications, calibration, quality, and education. Salsbury is an active participant in national and international standards efforts in dimensional metrology and tolerancing, including being a member of the ASME B89 main committee, chair of the ASME B89 Subcommittee on Length, and a U.S. appointed subject matter expert to ISO/TC 213. Salsbury also serves NCSL International as the chair of the Dimensional Metrology Committee, a past board member, and past coordinator of the Chicago section.

Salsbury has been working in the measurement field for over 25 years and has been with Mitutoyo since 2000. He received his doctoral degree from the Center for Precision Metrology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Salsbury teaches courses in dimensional metrology and is a senior ISO/IEC 17025 assessor with the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA).
