General Carbide strengthens wire EDM block abilities

Can manufacture, ship more than 40 standard and custom sizes of WEDM blocks.

Greensburg, Pennsylvania – General Carbide, a manufacturer of tungsten carbide tooling for industrial wear and metal forming applications, has expanded its operations to produce more than 40 standard and custom sizes of superior-grade WEDM blocks for a wide range of stamping and fabricating applications. To help ensure that blocks are of the highest metallurgical quality and reach customers intact and quickly, the company processes every order in sinter-HIP furnaces, ships the blocks in durable packaging, guarantees turnaround of three to five business days, and tracks shipments door-to-door.

“Providing superior grades and more WEDM options is the result of listening to customers and prospects, making a significant capital investment,” says Mona Pappafava-Ray, General Carbide’s president and CEO. “Our submicron grain size of tungsten carbide particles is ideal for wear resistant grades capable of withstanding moderate impact loads. In contrast, our 4µm carbide particle grain size and use of tantalum carbide yield a WEDM block that offers the highest resistance to galling.”

Each year, General Carbide invests more than $1 million in capital improvements to ensure that the company is using the latest technologies and most efficient business processes. According to Pappafava-Ray, “The fact that we are able to strengthen our capabilities from one year to the next is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our management team and production staff.”
