MDA - Lutze

Tuesday 9/11: 9:00 to 9:55 a.m. / W196-A

Topic Track: MDA
Session Topic: VFD Cabling and Changes in NFPA 79

The recently updated 2018 NFPA 79 electrical standard for industrial machinery requires the use of thermoset wiring types for installation on power conversion equipment such as variable frequency drives (VFDs) and variable speed drives.

Proper cabling, an often-underestimated component, is vital to the safe and proper function of a variable speed drive using pulse width modulation. Installers are often faced with lack of direction from equipment manufacturers or with conflicting requirements as different countries have different standards for wiring methods. But if the cable construction is not up to the job, it can cause the system to function improperly and raise safety issues due to premature cable failures and short circuits.

This presentation will analyze how the effects of pulse width modulation challenge the cable construction, what the NFPA 79 2018 edition is recommending, and what direction the industry is taking to address these issues.
