May 16 through May 19 saw 2,800 people from 46 countries visit Changwon, South Korea to attend the sixth bi-annual Doosan Infracore Machine Fair (DIMF). This year, the attendees previewed 58 new machine tool models, featuring new designs and new technologies.
Doosan presently employs 280 design engineers, and supports them with an annual R&D budget of $10 million. The results of this commitment were evidenced in newly applied technologies. Introduced were ultra-high-speed machining centers with thermal displacement compensation capabilities, nano-precision cutters, and multifunction turning centers with built-in 3D collision control. In addition, 11 new machines were introduced to meet the needs of die and mold makers. Simplified exteriors with fresh colors, and ergonomically designed peripherals completed the presentation.
W.B. Kim, Vice President of Doosan's Machine Tools Business Group, expresses a bright outlook for business in 2007. His projections indicate the company will install approximately 30% more new machines than in 2006. Part of this projected growth will result from Doosan Infracore having absorbed Doosan Mecatec's machine tool business. The remainder will result from the company's expanded efforts in developing applied technologies and other value-added initiatives.
