Universal Vertical Thread Grinder
The VGE60A high precision universal vertical thread grinder offers important benefits for customers making precision lead-screw type parts. The vertical design configuration offers improved accuracy, speed, performance, and multi-functionality compared to conventional horizontal thread grinder designs, according to the manufacturer.
It is categorized as a universal machine because different grinding operations can be performed. In addition to thread grinding, the machine can now perform spline, gear, OD, surface, and edge grinding operations in a single setup, saving customers significant production time while improving overall part accuracy. Newly designed features such as an automatic grinding wheel changer, automatic wheel guard, and a CNC-controlled wheel dresser (to accommodate various shaped wheels) improve productivity. The vertical orientation of the work enhances overall precision by eliminating workpiece sag.
The vertical configuration requires 33% less floor space than a similar capacity horizontal grinder, and allows for improved human interface with the complete work zone. The machine is compatible with both oil- and water-based coolants. This universal vertical thread grinder recently won the Grand Prize in Japan’s 43rd Machine Design Awards competition, sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry.

Quick-Change 5-Axis Workholding
The CL5 quick-change, 5-axis workholding system consists of three components: a subplate, a riser, and top tooling made up of a vise or a fixture plate. The subplate transforms a T-slot table into a modular fixturing plate, allowing flexible and easy clamping and locating of other tooling and/or fixtures. Every plate has built-in clamping and locating for risers, which allows for quick and accurate setups. Designed to get the part up from the machine table, the Quintus quick-change riser allows 5-side part access. The Quintus combines the riser, quick-change capability, and precise location in one piece, with no other accessories needed. A range of either fixture plates or vises can be readily mounted on top of the Quintus, and several versions of fixture plates and vises are available. Vises come in a range of sizes, including some concentric styles, and numerous jaw types and sizes are available to accommodate a wide variety of parts.
Quick Specs
- Top tooling: blank fixture plate, 5-axis vise, or multifunction fixture plate
- Quintus quick-change riser: No extra adapters required; connects to any subplate
- Subplate: 7 standard sizes; use alone or with risers and plates; custom plate option

Chatter-Free Indexable Milling
The latest High QLine family of cutting tools offers an unusual solution to the problem of chatter or vibration in metal cutting: an indexable milling insert with an asymmetric shape. The design of the new one-sided insert HM90 ADCT 1505 ...-CF follows a different and unique approach compared to traditional milling inserts in the market. The insert has different helix angles on the two cutting edges and the two edges are colored gold and black. The concept is to mount gold and black edges alternately, resulting in variable helix configuration for the cutter. This feature ensures significant improvement of the cutters’ performance in shoulder milling by reducing vibrations. Typically, the tool life of the insert increases by 15% to 20% and the power consumption is reduced by 10% or more.
The new asymmetric insert is compatible with the existing Heli-Mil family of milling cutters.
