Video measuring microscope with image processing

Designed for the measurement and/or dimensioning of geometric elements, the MarVision MM 320 incorporates an integrated CCD color camera with zoom lens, a 23" touchscreen PC with keyboard and mouse, and Windows 7-based M3 software.

Automatic edge detection allows low-contrast features to be measured, and the Multi Touch function provides quick and continuous variable magnification using either touchscreen or mouse.

Applications range from cutting tools and precision products for manufacturing to miniaturized electronic components.

The MM 320 rests on a robust hardened granite base with a precision-mounted X-Y table. An optical incremental measuring system offers quick and fine adjustment of the axis, and a laser pointer assists with part positioning. The CCD camera and Navitar Zoom lens with 0.7x to 4.5x magnification are mounted on a stable Z-column with 200mm vertical movement.

Coarse and fine height-adjustment knobs are mounted on both sides for precise focusing. Illumination is provided by a quadrant LED-ring top light with four individually controlled segments, and table-mounted telecentric LED-transmitted light provides more focused measurement of rotationally symmetric parts.

The automated video edge detection and multi-touch functions make the MarVision MM 320 suitable for a wide range of punched and flexible parts, plastic components, and electronic circuit boards.

Modular quick-change tooling system

The Preci-Flex modular quick-change tooling system features a selection of adapters engineered to hold different cutting tool and shank designs. The adapter’s common connecting feature locks into a standard base unit on the machine turret, enabling tool/adapter assemblies to be preset off-line then quickly switch in and out of the base unit. Tool positions repeat within ±3µm, eliminating the need to re-center, touch off, or make test cuts.

The Preci-Flex conical and flat-face planar interface duplicates the taper of the standard ER collet, enabling ER collets, albeit at lesser repeatability, to be used along with Preci-Flex adapters to mount collets, endmill holders, expanding collet chucks, and shrink fit tooling on a single base holder. Operated at the front face of the turret, the connector provides two tons of clamping force, and its compact design maximizes torque transmission and rigidity, increasing accuracy and productivity.

Six-jaw equalizing chuck

The SJL 6-jaw (2+2+2) equalizing chuck is designed for clamping deformed components while providing the flexibility to hold workpieces as a true 6-jaw self-centering chuck.

Designed with a centrifugal force compensation system, this feature reduces the effects of centrifugal force, allowing for higher speeds and feeds, vastly reducing production time.

The 2+2+2 equalization capability ensures that all six jaws are in contact with the work piece at all times, thus minimizing any deformations or inaccuracies of the component, making it suitable for clamping raw materials.

The 6-jaw self-centering option uses a concentric clamp with all six jaws, allowing it to hold round, machined diameters, and thin-walled workpieces with equal wall thickness.

Available in tongue-and-groove as well as metric serration options, the SJL chuck is available in sizes ranging from 225mm to 400mm.

Automated machining cell

Absolute Machine Tools will demonstrate at IMTS a die-sinker EDM, a machining center, and a robot integrated into an automated machining cell.

A Fanuc M-20iA robot will tend the manufacturing cell consisting of an AccuteX DS-550CM die sinker EDM and a Tongtai TMV-510G machining center. The EDM has an X,Y, Z working capacity of 20" x 16" x 14" (500mm x 400mm x 355mm). The work table size is 32" x 18" (813mm x 457mm). Maximum workpiece size is 47" x 27" x 17" (1,194mm x 686mm x 686mm), and this machine can accommodate workpiece weights up to 2,970 lb. (1345kg). The EDM was designed using finite element analysis (FEA) to ensure high-accuracy machining. Further contributing to its rigidity is a heavily ribbed, high-grade Meehanite casting.

Options for the DS-550 for greater flexibility include a built-in C axis with 360° indexing, an automatic electrode changer, dielectric cooler, and custom tooling package. Customers can perform 3-axis machining in 6 directions, multi-cavity, circular, square, and any angle orbiting, internal/external spherical, and 45° corner machining. Further, the EDM can do 3-axis linear machining, 2-axis arc machining, and offers helical machining electrode compensation.

The TMV-510G machining center in the cell is engineered for high speed, efficient production of precision graphite electrodes and similar items. A fixed column/moving table type machine, it features a high performance 20,000rpm direct-drive spindle that is oil-cooled for thermal stability, and a 20-station, high-speed arm-type automatic tool changer (ATC) that produces tool changes in 0.8 seconds and chip-to-chip times of 1.9 seconds.

With X-Y-Z travels of 20", 14.2", and 11.8" (500mm, 355mm, 295mm) respectively, and a 23.6" x 13.6" (590mm x 340mm) work table area, the machine offers useful work volume in a compact 95" x 55" x 90" (2,375mm x 1,375mm x 2,250mm) footprint that conserves valuable shop floor space.

The cell at IMTS has features specifically for graphite machining. The arm-type ATC keeps tools away from contamination and out of the work zone, and a standard full cover on top of the machine contains dust.

A Donaldson Torit DFO 2-2 1,200cfm dust collector evacuates dust from the machine, and automatic shakers clean the filters and deposit the dust into an easily emptied hopper.

The Fanuc M-20iA performing all the part handling tasks in the cell is a compact robot with a slim wrist and small footprint for operation in tight spaces. It can be mounted on the floor, wall, or ceiling. It has a reach of 71" (1,811mm) and full circular motion.

Metal additive manufacturing system

The M 290 direct metal laser-sintering system is designed for the tool-free production of high-quality serial components, spare parts, and prototypes. With a build volume of 250mm x 250mm x 325mm (9.8" x 9.8" x 12.8"), the M 290 permits flexible and economic manufacturing of metal components.

The unit offers extensive monitoring functions both for the system and for the build process, which adds more extensive quality assurance to the field of additive manufacturing. With the aid of EOSTATE PowderBed, a camera built into the process chamber monitors the powder bed, following powder deposition and exposure, by means of still images. EOSTATE Base ensures the consistent monitoring of a range of parameters, including the position of the Z axis or scanner, laser power, air humidity, temperature, and pressure. Finally, EOSTATE LaserMonitoring measures the laser power throughout the entire build period.

The system is equipped with a 400W laser characterized by its high radiation quality and stability of performance. The M 290 can be operated under an inert (nitrogen) atmosphere or under argon, which permits processing of a great breadth of materials including light alloys, stainless and tool-grade steels, and super-alloys.

EOSYSTEM machine software allows intuitive and task-oriented operation of the system via a graphic user interface, which was developed especially for production environments. In addition, an operator assistant guides the user through the program.
