Mechanical component electrical insulation

Motion system designers have a new option to arrest electrical current. In addition to their primary function, these composite disc (CD) couplings are designed with flex elements that are non-conductive.

The flex element provides electrical insulation while protecting mechanical components from system overloads. CD couplings do not pass electrical current through the coupling.

In addition to protecting from stray electrical current, CD couplings protect generators in a system from transferring lower reaction loads to the generator bearings. The coupling’s composite discs withstand all types of environmental elements, including temperature extremes from -40°C to 70°C, and also moisture and chemicals.

Additional operating features include: zero backlash, excellent for reversing loads, smooth operation at high speeds, and compact size with a clamping system that fits most applications. CD couplings are available in standard models and sizes include single and double flex models with clamp style hubs with or without keyways. The torque capacities range from 40Nm to beyond 1436Nm with speed ratings from 4,400rpm to 17,000rpm.

All CD couplings are environmentally friendly and are manufactured of RoHS compliant materials.

Metal nano connectors withstand shock, vibration

Metal nano connectors are high-density, multi-position connectors made with breakaway or threaded metal housings for a positive lock and environmental seal. Built to meet or exceed military specifications, the small, lightweight, but strong connectors are suitable for mission-critical applications where size, weight, and reliability are crucial, such as on board unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The electronic functions inside UAVs – such as circuits, cameras, and other instruments – require cable and interconnects that are extremely small and lightweight but that can also withstand high shock and vibrations while maintaining electrical integrity. Metal nano connectors are not only among the smallest military-quality connectors available today, but they also survive ruggedness tests beyond military specifications. Temperature ranges exceed 200°C, and locking screws hold all connections together securely during rough landings.

Board-mounted versions of the metal nano connectors mate with pre-wired connector/cables for instrument wiring. The connectors are available in four shell sizes: 6, 11, 16, and 28 positions arranged on a 0.025" (0.64mm) pitch and are capable of 1A per contact. They can be configured with different levels of waterproof sealing up to IP-68. A variety of shell material and finishes are available including nickel-plated brass and back oxide stainless steel.

Most metal nano connectors’ standard designs can be purchased off the shelf.

Compact, GaN-based solid-state broadband power amplifiers

A range of GaN-based, solid-state power amplifiers (SSPA) now include a 2GHz to 6GHz model that can be operated in either pulsed or CW mode.

The DM-SC50-01 is an ultra-compact broadband amplifier that complements existing SSPAs in X-Band and Ku-Band. All of the amplifiers are for use in defense, aerospace, and communications applications.

The design is demonstrating 100W peak power in pulsed mode at 2GHz and an average power capability of 50W across the full band. This amplifier measures only 120mm x 100mm x 20mm,, excluding the heat sink. The amplifier designs are flexible in layout and architecture, and are fully customizable to meet individual specifications for electrical, mechanical, and environmental parameters.

At-a-glance

  • Ultra-compact
  • Can be run pulsed or CW
  • Peak pulsed output power up to +51dBm
  • Drain-pulsed, ultra-fast rise/fall time
  • Internal temperature monitor
  • Layout can be tailored to suit system and interfaces
  • Alternative to TWT amplifiers

Small, high current servo drive

The Gold Bee nano drive delivers ultra-high current of 50A at 100VDC in harsh environments and a servo power density of more than 4,000W from a package only 8.7cm3 (0.53 in3).

It was designed and qualified to operate in conditions from -40°C to 70°C, and mechanical vibrations up to 14 GRMS.

In conjunction to the EASII software (Elmo Application Studio II), the Gold Bee can optimize the control results of any servo mechanism. It is suitable for applications that have critical space constraints, require a powerful servo, limited heat dissipation capabilities, and operate in extreme environments.

The unit operates in current, velocity, and advanced position modes in conjunction with a permanent-magnet synchronous DC brush and brushless motors, linear motor, or voice coil. It also supports a wide variety of feedback sensors in single, dual, and gantry loop configurations.

Integrated encoder

The IEH2-4096 integrated encoder offers higher resolution, an expanded operating temperature range, and improved speed control, especially in the low speed range. The new model can be combined with precious metal commutated DC motors with diameters from 15mm to 22mm, and the encoder will lengthen them by just 1.4mm. Encoders with a separate attachment housing require more installation space.

With the IEH2-4096, the previous components – sensor and circuit – are replaced by one single-chip Hall module. This newly developed circuit board is more thermally robust than the previously used magneto-resistive sensors and integrated circuits. As a result, the operating temperature range could be expanded to -40°C to 100°C. At 4,096 pulses, the encoder has a resolution four times higher than the previous model, which leads to improved control dynamics. The new encoder also offers improved speed control, particularly at low speeds, but remains mechanically compatible with the previous models.

The integrated encoder can be used in a wide range of applications, including measurement devices, valve systems (camera technology), and mirror positioning or lens/filter adjustment (precision optics) – applications where size is critical.
