Comments to raise your eyebrows

It is not very often that a response is received to an editorial written two years ago. Needless to say, I was flabbergasted to receive an e-mail response to the editorial I wrote in 2011, titled “Living in a world that makes no sense.”

Since he did not personally write the response, the individual sending it says he could not take credit. But upon reading it, he had flashbacks to my editorial. It is titled “Food for Thought” by Junius P. Long, and I would like to share some of his comments with you.

“If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for being in this country illegally, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If you need to show identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor, or check-out a book from the library, but not to vote for who runs the government, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If the government wants to ban stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines with more than 10 rounds, but gives 20 F-16 fighter jets to Egypt, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If, in New York, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not a 24-ounce soda because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat, you might be living in a country founded by geniuses, but run by fools.

“If a 7-year-old boy can be thrown out of school for saying his teacher is cute, but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is perfectly acceptable, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If your government believes the best way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If children are forcibly removed from parents who discipline them with spankings, while children of addicts are left in filth and drug-infested homes, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government intrusion, while not working is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and free cell phones, you might be live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.

“If the government’s plan for getting people back to work is to incentivize not working with 99 weeks of unemployment checks and no requirement to prove they looked for work, you might live in a country founded by geniuses, but now run by fools.”

No doubt, Junius P. Long’s comments are candid and, in my humble opinion, make a great deal of sense. I would guess there is a little Junius P. Long in all of us and that we could add to his list without much hesitation. So, if you are inclined to build upon the list, I would really like to hear from you.
