EM series high-speed VMC
EM series high-speed vertical machining centers (VMC) support large-quantity machining with limited floor space. The series comes in EM1620L, EM2033L, and EM2040L models, with footprints 16"x20" to 20"x40".
High-quality Meehanite cast iron in major parts offers superior stability. The machine’s base is fully supported for high-speed machining. High-speed linear ways on all three axes provide smooth, quick movement.
The series provides fast interpolation, minimizing machining time with speed up to 1,889.7ipm. The 20hp spindle motor handles up to 10,000rpm, offering surface finishing in high-speed with high torque in lower rpm. Optional 12,000rpm is available. Another benefit is quick pick-up speed, with high-speed rigid tapping.
Series features include: FANUC 0iMD, color 8.4" LCD has 4-axis, simultaneous contouring, linear-circular-helical interpolation, and canned cycles for drilling, tapping, and profiling.
After final assembly, all Chevalier machines are measured and calibrated by laser and ball-bar test equipment to ensure precise verification and compensation for increased accuracy and repeatability.

Deep-hole drill
The R459, a solid carbide drill for applications up to 8xD, is suitable for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper, and aluminium, and has been developed to overcome problems typically associated with deep-hole drilling.
Created within the Dormer product portfolio, the R459 broadens the existing MP-X range that already consists of 3xD and 5xD solid carbide multi-material drills.
The drill’s continuously thinned web (CTW) geometry increases both flute volume and cross sectional strength.
The combination of these elements ensures consistent forces throughout the drilling cycle, with little or no increase in power requirement as the drill penetrates deeper into the hole. This allows increased cutting speeds and greater performance reliability without compromising tool life.
A special outer corner design provides added protection against wear and chipping, especially when under extreme conditions, such as cross drilling applications, while a specially designed 140° point angle makes for easier centring and reduces thrust requirements.
The R459 is available in diameters from 3mm to 16mm, including 0.1mm increments up to 10.0mm, and features a titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN) coating.

Handheld NC-programmable drilling unit for composites
For best results machining multiple material layers, cutting parameters must be applied for each material. The Somex L-MAX portable, handheld NC-programmable drilling unit can perform all of these functions in automatic mode.
When machining titanium, carbon, or aluminum stacked in layers, the spindle speed and feed rate must be adapted for each material transition.
L-MAX integrates two servo motors: the larger motor drives the spindle and the smaller servo regulates the feed. The feed rate is determined by the speed difference between ball screw and ball screw nut. If the rpm of the feed servo motor is higher than the spindle motor speed, then the L-MAX spindle will advance. If the rpm of the feed servo motor is lower than the spindle motor rpm, the L-MAX spindle will retract.
The control system IDM allows the user to regulate spindle speed and feed servo motors at any position of travel.
An adaptive drilling mode allows the drill to recognize the transition from one layer to the next automatically. Irregular material layer thickness at any position is detected and matched with the correct cutting parameters, minimizing cycle times and optimizing machining quality.
Performance data:
- Programmable spindle speed and spindle feed
- Work cycles such as chip brake cycle and peck feed cycle
- Spindle speed range from 3,000rpm up to 5,000rpm
- Drilling capacity from 4.76mm (3/16") up to 11.11mm (7/16")
- Integrated minimum quantity lubrication system
- Light weight, depending on drilling capacity, from 5.5kg (12 lb)
- Quiet operation up to 65dBA
- Option: Adaptive drilling mode
