In 2013, the focus for Handtmann engineers is firmly on horizontal machining centers, providing more innovations in high performance machining as they further develop its HBZ Trunnion 5-axis horizontal machining centers.

The advantages of horizontal machining are obviously transferable to smaller structural parts: the HBZ Trunnion is particularly fast compared to conventional machining centers when it comes to machining workpieces that required deep pockets and drilled holes.

The HBZ cells provide excellent performance, allowing considerable reductions in downtime. The addition of a pallet changing system further increases machining productivity.

The development of the Trunnion Handtmann combines the most significant productivity benefits of horizontal machining and applies them to smaller components. The arrangement of the axes – X-, Y-, and Z-axis travel independent from the workpiece and the rotary and swivel C- and A-axis combine in an NC rotary swivel table – together with a single piece machine bed and three-point floor mounting, deliver excellent rigidity and process reliability to the PowerCube.

These combine with a choice of spindles to provide the optimum solution to every customer requirement and to allow economical machining of titanium, steel, aluminum, and composite. With its wide range of sizes – including 800mm, 1,200mm, and 1,600mm table sizes – and various spindle options, the HBZ Trunnion is a suitable for a wide range of applications.

To increase productivity, Handtmann engineers have developed a pallet changing system for the HBZ Trunnion for fast changeover of workpieces. By installing an additional pallet rack, the automation can extend to accommodate any number of pallets. To exploit all the opportunities that this rigid and flexible machine design offers, the HBZ Trunnion will be equipped with an additional turning option. The turning option expands the machining center into a 5-axis milling and turning center. Economic machining of components requiring milling and turning is possible with speeds up to 800rpm.

With the expansion of the HBZ Trunnion series towards larger cube sizes Handtmann has established a unique selling point. With table sizes of 1,200mm and 1,600mm, the HBZ Trunnion 120 and the HBZ Trunnion 160 offer the same machining advantages as the Trunnion 80 for larger workpieces. Therefore, these larger machines deliver rigidity while machining both titanium and steel.
