Speeding work on high Z-axis parts

A large-diameter, low-profile chuck combines part-geometry versatility with quick-change capability.

A large-diameter, low-profile mechanical chuck that combines part-geometry versatility with a quick-change top jaw system can speed operations on high Z-axis parts and help in applications requiring height and/or vertical tool travel.

Because the 50" 6-jaw chuck (the black disk in the photos) is incredibly thin compared to conventional chucks, it can be mounted to an aluminum riser (gold disk) to achieve the desired Z-axis zero part locations. Also, the chuck/riser’s combined weight of 1,830 lb was necessary to accommodate customized part payload.

The top jaws system is built upon a master driver jaw that is bolted into position atop the required location of any key in the master chuck jaw. The top jaws are then lowered onto the driver jaw that engages the top jaw with a 45° land at the nose-end of the driver. A locking screw at the back side of each top jaw secures it into position and onto the top surface of the chuck. The chuck body, not the master jaws, supports the load.

A 2-jaw, self-centering vise setup easily accommodates a large steel burnout. For example, this setup combined with a Mazak Integrex machine, allows processing to the top surface and sides, and through bores. The part is complete in just two operations, saving multiple handlings and operations being run on separate turning, milling, and drilling equipment.

Because of the effective size of these parts, days of time are saved, not just hours. End jacks are in place to push the workpiece left or right for the initial load. They are removed to enable side milling and drilling operations. Each top jaw also contains its Acme screw adjustment, so an existing bore can be indicated on the second operation.
