Okuma TechTrek Showcases Manufacturing Solutions
During the three-day event, Okuma America Corp. and Okuma distributors hosted more than 200 manufacturing professionals at the Okuma and Partners in THINC facilities in Charlotte, NC. With 24 machines on display and 29 Partners in THINC representatives on hand to address questions, attendees had the opportunity to truly explore potential manufacturing solutions and discover ways to improve their productivity.
As a showcase for Partners in THINC, the event provided an education for many attendees as they discovered the depth and breadth of companies represented. One participant commented, “I was not aware of all of the different companies operating as one in the same building. The fact that you can bring together so many suppliers that are competitors and have them working together is a great resource for the end customers such as myself.”
Okuma will host more learning events in 2012, including a series of Lunch & Learn events at the Partners in THINC facility and at the Okuma Tech Centers in Chicago and Houston. okuma.com, partnersinthinc.com

MAG Shares in ManTech Award
The Department of Defense recognized MAG IAS LLC with a Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Achievement award for its contributions to a team that developed improved composites processing technology for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. An estimated cost reduction of $100 million was the result of these developments. Presented at the Defense Manufacturing Conference in November, the award to Lockheed Martin Aerospace, Hitco Carbon Composites, Cytec Engineered Materials, and MAG cited the team for its development of a new method for optimizing the automated fiber placement (AFP) of bismaleimide (BMI) composite material in the manufacture of wing skins and nacelles. Working with the South Carolina Research Authority’s (SCRA) Applied R&D division, the team developed methodologies that increased lay-down rates of BMI by 47% for JSF wing skins and 62% for the aircraft’s nacelles. mag-ias.com
