Twelve months after breaking ground in Davis, CA, the first Mori Seiki Manufacturing USA (MSM) facility is operational. The state-of-the-art 200,000ft² facility produces the NHX4000 and is looking to expand its manufacturing capabilities to include the NHX5000, NHX6300, and possibly the DMU 50 by 2013. Planned production of the Davis, CA, facility is for the production of 90 units per month when at full capacity. The first MSM plant will employ approximately 150 people when fully staffed.
In 2000, software and machinery development began at Mori Seiki’s Digital Technology Laboratory (DTL), Davis, CA, which currently has a staff of 80. Establishing a manufacturing presence in Northern California, DTL has a strong selection of engineering talent from nearby UC Davis and Berkeley campuses. These students also prove to be a perfect fit for MSM’s first U.S. manufacturing facility, regarded as a proving ground for the latest advances in technology, engineering, and computer sciences. MSM will focus on the horizontal machining centers, in particular, the X-Class NHX4000, NHX5040, and NHX5050, according to DMG / Mori Seiki USA, President, Mark Mohr.
Built on 14.5 acres, several sections make up the facility, with machining and assembly being the main two sections. Manufacturing of the bed, column, feed box, table-base, magazine-base, as well as many other components will occur at the plant. However, the ball screws and spindles will be machined in Japan, according to Mohr.

“The west coast location makes it very easy to work with our Japanese colleagues. For instance, we will be importing ball screws and spindles from our manufacturing facilities in Japan – not for the purpose of cost savings, but because they are simply the highest quality,” says Mohr.
The new facility, with planned employment of approximately 150 people, has the capabilities to run 24 hours a day, with only one shift maintaining the equipment. Best of all, from a green perspective, the manufacturing does not require a coolant system.
The location of the new MSM facility will allow the manufacturing facility to work closely with DTL, providing customers with excellent technical support and faster delivery times, giving the enduser a large advantage.
When all is said and done, this is a win-win for everyone involved, DMG / Mori Seiki USA, DTL, the greater Davis, CA, area, and U.S. manufacturing.
