Mason, Ohio – Festo, manufacturer of pneumatic and electric automation technology, has officially opened a logistics and assembly plant in Mason, Ohio, near Cincinnati. Now, 70% of Festo customers in North America can receive automation products with a 10-hour truck-drive – from New York in the East to Chicago in the West, from Toronto in the North to Atlanta in the South.
Festo invested about $70 million in the state-of-the-art, 200,200ft2 distribution and manufacturing center with a highly automated order picking system comparable to the sophisticated warehouse systems of major retail brands. With these new premises, Festo is now able to triple its capacities, allowing for more flexibility, improved service, and space for future growth.
The Regional Service Center (RSC) Mason is designed to allow for the speed and flexibility needed to accommodate Festo’s future growth in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico as Festo US continues to invest in its distribution network and sales force. The RSC will also support the expected growth in Mexico, which is becoming a recognised hub for the automotive industry.
The new center has Foreign Trade Zone status, which makes it faster and more efficient to support North American customers from a central U.S. location.
With a storage capacity of 65,000 bins, the highly automated warehouse system – implemented by Witron, a designer and supplier of fully automated warehouse and logistics systems – features seven high-performance picking stations and the capability to pick and pack 1,000 items per hour.
“As regional and U.S. sales continue to grow, this Regional Service Center will provide a strong product supply backbone for the North American market with best in class supply chain performance,” said Yannick Schilly, head of product supply NAFTA and RSC Mason.
The facility also allows for customized product manufacturing. Because sales parts are stored or delivered here, employees can respond immediately to specific customer requests and have the ordered products assembled and ready for quick shipment.
Examples of customer-specific assemblies are components based on drawings, adjustment of pressure switches according to specifications, made-to-measure cylinders, equipping of valve terminals, cylinder/valve combinations, valve manifolds, semi-rotary drives with ball valve and sensor box, or simple complete solutions.
The company’s training and apprenticeship program, Festo Didactic, also has space in RSC Mason, with classroom facilities and hands-on learning opportunities. The program, combining community college instruction, training at the RSC, and workplace experience, just launched in August with 11 students. The program supplies basic and further training in automation technology for participants enrolled from Festo and its partners.
